Disappointing Products of 2016

So since I did a post on what were my favourite makeup products of the year, it’s only right that I include one on the products that disappointed me. As with my favourites, not all of these were released in 2016 but I thought I would talk about them anyway!

Firstly I have a Nyx Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in the shade Sunbeam. It was so difficult to find this so I was really disappointed when I eventually got my hands on it and it was pretty rubbish. All it did was make my face really really shiny and glittery. It wasn’t a subtle glow in the slightest.

I also find Nars Sheer Glow foundation. I know this is hyped about so much on the internet but I really do not like this foundation. My reasoning for this is that I bought this under the impression this was a reasonably high coverage foundation (despite the name). I didn’t find this was the case in the slightest, and it didn’t cover any of my redness or blemishes at all.

This next one I think is maybe a bit unfair to describe as disappointing, but it was rather underwhelming. This is Stay don’t Stray by Benefit. I didn’t see the point in using this at all and I felt it was unnecessary as a concealer and useless as an eyeshadow base. I think this is just down to personal preference however, because I think I prefer a thicker eyeshadow base like the Mac Paint Pots.

The Catrice Nude Illusion Loose Powder is one that when I first tried it, I loved it because it was the first setting powder I had used. Since then I tried the Laura Mercier loose powder and it is the best one I’ve found. The Catrice one did do the job of setting my under eye, but I found that it removed my foundation and concealer that was underneath somehow and made my skin look really uneven.

I also chose the Kiko Wet and Dry eyeshadows as a disappointing product. These colours are so stunning, and the design of them are so beautiful, but I just don’t enjoy them at all. When you put them on your eye, both wet or dry, they look great. A few hours later however, they disappear off of the eye completely and lose all vibrancy. They aren’t the cheapest for a single shadow either, so I don’t think I would waste any more money on these.

Lastly for face products I have the Mac Mineralize Skinfinishes. These are pretty, but I feel like in the growing market of highlighters, these have just fallen behind. You don’t get a lot of pigment from these and they don’t give much of a glow. I guess if you like a subtle highlight then these will be perfect for you, but for me I just found them a bit disappointing, even though I really wanted these to work.

For eyeshadow palettes, I have to talk about the Urban Decay Naked palettes. If I were to recommend a neutral eyeshadow palette to anyone, I would tell them to go for one of the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palettes and to stay clear of the Urban Decay Naked palettes. The colours may be pretty but for the price the pigment isn’t there at all. Out of all of them, I do enjoy the Smoky one the best because they work really nicely wet, but they still have a lot of fallout.

For liner, I thought I would mention the Lancome Grandoise liner. This is a lovely liner, but it dries out so quickly and I always feel like I have to dip into the container multiple  times before I can finish my eye liner. For the price tag, I think this is too expensive for the amount of uses you get.

And that is all my disappointing products that I have tried in 2016! Let me know if you’ve found the same problems as me with these products, or if there are any I should stay away from!

  1. Omg I love many of these products, but then again it doesn’t work for everyone! Do you have a post of products you love for 2016?

  2. Great post but it’s sad that you were disappointed with these products. Personally I use the Nars sheer glow foundation and it is my favourite by a long way. I have oily skin and it’s got blemishes and some spots. I feel this foundation covers them very well and when you put more than one layer on you get amazing coverage. Everyone is different though. It’s a shame you don’t like it xxx

  3. I totally agree with the catrice powder. Doesn’t work for me at all. It just makes my skin too matte and all the lines under my eyes are even more noticeable.
I love the Nars foundation but for some reasons it doesn’t works great for all.
Thanks for sharing this ! 😀

  4. Benefit is the one company that drives me up a wall. Their products are so hit or miss. The one product I LOVED by benefit was “She-Laq” it was a sealer for makeup and was the best stuff I’ve ever used. Benefit discontinued it. WTF?? NARS foundation–I’ve never tried it but I love the NARS Multiple in Riviera. I wrote my “best of’s” yesterday. https://atypical60.com/

    • I totally agree on the Benefit front. As for NARS, i haven’t tried any of their other products just because they’re not cheap and I’m scared i won’t like anything else! This year I’ll make it my mission to find something I like!
